Okay, NOW You Can Take the Wheel

My teenaged son started Behind-the-Wheel training today. In preparation he's been driving me around town for the 40 hours required of every teen driver in Virginia before he can get his license. Now, I'm not about to claim a fellowship of suffering with our Lord in the desert, or the Israelites of Exodus, or Noah on the floodwaters. But I find it significant that the Commonwealth of Virginia chose the number 40--the number often associated Biblically with testing--when deciding how long a parent and teen should "bond" together in a two-ton steel cocoon hurtling forward at speeds as high as 65 miles per hour.

It's not that my son drives recklessly. He's actually an impressive learner. But there's nothing that drives home one's controlling nature like having to turn that wheel over to someone whose capabilities haven't yet been proven.

And isn't that just a little slice of your average person's struggle with life? Like the character in Carrie Underwood's song, "Jesus Take the Wheel," we often wait until our cars (our lives) are careening out of control before we offer that wheel over to Jesus. "Okay, Lord, I've made a total mess of things. Now this baby is all Yours. Here Ya go, right there, that's fer You, yessir."

Aren't we more sure of His capabilities than that?

Certainly, He's willing to take over when we drive our lives into pot holes, ditches, and swimming pools. (Hey, it happens.)

He's awesome that way. But wouldn't it be nice for us (and I'll bet the Lord would appreciate it, too), if we started each morning turning the wheel over to Him before we even had anything to do with it?

I make it a point to touch base with the Lord before I brush my teeth each morning. Okay, sometimes I touch base while I'm brushing. But having a physical cue helps. Do any of you have a way to remember to put Him behind the wheel each day? Will you share it?

Trish, that cracked me up. I don't know if you meant it to, but that sure does seem to be on point. It is awesome that you wrote what you did. I have made a point recently to really try to invite the Lord into my day. My time is usually in the shower. I guess that is because it is THE only place I feel that I can totally block out everything for the moment and focus on a conversation with God. I work at a Christian radio station, and I wake up with different songs in my head every morning. That is my other clue. My conversation with God blots out the song. Believe it or not...you can definitely hear a song too many times when it is running in your head. :) Thanks for the great blog.

Yep, Kelly, I guess we can't love EVERY Christian song, just because it's Christian! I'm glad to hear you're able to focus on the Lord in the shower. I tend to focus on how much more of me there is to shower than there used to be!

I talk to the Lord while I'm brushing my teeth too! After all, He's the only one I CAN talk to then. I'd love another chance to win the book.

Don't enter me into the contest to win my own book (tee hee), but I have to say I saw your pics of the vehicles in the pools and actually it's not as unusual as you'd think. When we lived in Phoenix my hubby worked the night shift and one morning he came home late, making me late for work. To make things more puzzling, he smelled like chlorine and was wet. When he told me he was late coming home because someone ran a red light and nailed a young woman's vehicle, which sent it crashing through a concrete wall and into the person's backyard inground pool, well, how could I be mad at that? On top of it all the woman he "rescued" was nine months pregnant. He didn't have a cell phone then so he couldn't call me to let me know why he was running late and I couldn't leave my two toddlers home alone. Ah, but what he did was so heroic. :) And my boss forgave my tardiness.

Mine tends to be in the shower as well. That seems to be the place where I think best and can block out the world.

I would love to win Michelle's book. It sounds wonderful.

I am not a morning person so my quiet time with the Lord is usually in the evening after the kids are in bed. What you said makes sense however and I totally agree so I think I will start my day with a quick prayer to start the day off right, even if it has to be while I am brushing my teeth. It certainly is to hard to do once my 21 month old is up. She wants constant attention.

Those pics are priceless! I can totally relate to what you're saying, Trish. Not only did I live in VA for eight years, so I know what the drivers are like in the Commonwealth, but now, I have a 17 year-old daughter - who has no interest in driving right now - to teach in Las Vegas, NV. At least we live in a quiet neighborhood...
