Balloons, Lawn Chairs, and Dreams

You may have heard about Kent Couch this past weekend. He's the 48-year-old gas station owner who strapped more than 150 giant party balloons to his lawn chair Saturday and flew 235 miles, from Bend, Oregon to Cambridge, Idaho, in his third such attempt in as many years. His goal was to fly from home to another state in this unorthodox fashion. His dream, since childhood, had been to "ride on a cloud."

Personally, my stomach flips just imagining being so high and so exposed. But you have to admire the guy's tenacity. He had a dream--albeit a weird one--and he kept at it until he realized that dream. He learned from his failed attempts, made adjustments, and tried again.

Writers must embrace the same attitude. Learn from rejection, adjust what you can, and submit again. What's the worst that can happen--having to try again? That's better than plummeting to your death in a lawn chair, don't you think?

If you'd like to see photos of Ken's takeoff, go HERE. But before you go, you might want to enter the CONTEST I mentioned on Friday. I'm giving away a free signed copy of my new novel, Beach Dreams. Simply leave a comment at the end of any of my blog posts (today's post is only my fourth) and/or subscribe to my blog, using the subscription box on the right. Why subscribe? I'll be giving away books (mine and those of the authors I interview) at least once a week. If you subscribe you'll never miss notice of a give-away.

So you have up to five chances for today's drawing. For each comment and each subscription, I'll add your name to the drawing once. Comment after each post and you'll increase your chances of winning. I'll draw the winner's name on July 13 and announce the winner on July 14, along with my interview of Michelle Sutton, author of It's Not About Me (Sheaf House).

If you'd like to win a free copy of Beach Dreams, be sure to leave your email address so I can reach you. For cyber-safety's sake, enter your address like so: trish[at]trishperry[dot]com

See you Monday!

The pictures of his takeoff are quite ...mmm.... interesting! Can't say it's something I would ever want to try. I don't even like planes, so I don't think being that exposed would be very enjoyable! I'm just glad the guy survived living his dream. :D

Hi, Trish,

You may remember me, I was the one you had to pass in the hallway of the hotel in Dallas (in '06) as I hobbled along with swollen feet in my flip-flops. (grin)

I'd love a copy of your new book, as I thoroughly enjoyed both "The Guy I'm Not Dating" and "Too Good to Be True"

So, please enter me!

Trish,

I've never read any of your books. Although I voted for Beach Dreams as the August selection for acfwbookclub. (I'm new to this group.) I'd love to win a copy but plan on reading Beach Dreams either way.

Trish please enter me for a copy of Beach Dreams.

Having a horrible fear of heights myself I can't imagine even thinking of trying what that guy did with his chair and balloons, heck I don't even like ladders.

Oh, my goodness, Jenny! I certainly hope this mode of transportation doesn't become a fad! I'm not surprised that it can become fatal.

I've heard of that guy. Novel way to save on gas, huh? I'd be afraid the whole shebang would flip over and I'd be cruising upside-down...for 235 miles.

I'd love to win a copy of Beach Dreams so I can see what happens next.

Enter me in the drawing. Speaking of flying I rode with my 65 year old father in a 2 seater plane he built on July 4th. I got a bit more nervous the higher we went. I would of been okay had he not pointed out the plate he was required by law to display. It said Passenger warning this aircraft is amateur built and does not me federal air regulations. I was silently quoting scripture and praying as he proudly flew around. He has been a pilot for 40 years. But still flying in a plane built by someone I knew.
Kind of nervewracking. spowell01(at)bellsouth(dot)net

I hadn't heard about this until now. My mom has always wanted to ride in a hot air balloon but I don't think party balloons would be her second choice.

Please enter me in your drawing. I have never read your books but now have you added to my list of authors to check out.

I love to win a copy of Beach Dreams. Sounds like a great read.
We live in southern Oregon, so Mr. Couch's achievement was front page news in our local paper. I agree, his tenacity is to be emulated, but not in a flying chair!

I would love to win a copy of Beach Dreams. I am always in the mood for a good story! We talked about Kent the other day on the radio, and I have to say kudos to him! When I was young...very young my mom was a realtor and she often used great big helium balloons (I mean HUGE reallY) to alert people to her open houses. I loved it, because I got to play with them later. Once I ran with my balloon and jumped and for the briefest moment, I was suspended in the air. I wigged out and let go. I cannot even imagine getting as high as he did!
Anyway, please enter me too! Thanks!
